Dr. Adang Bachtiar graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Indonesia in 1980. Following this, he gained his Masters of Public Health from Harvard University in 1987 and a subsequent Doctor of Science from John Hopkins University in 1992. He has also achieved a post doctoral certificate in Advanced Statistics from the University of Michigan.

He is President of the Indonesian Public Health Association (IPHA), currently serving a third period until 2016.

He currently teaches Master and PhD students in his capacity as Visiting Professor at medical, dental medicine, nursing, regional planning, and public health schools at the University of Indonesia, North Sumatera University, Andalas University and others, with more 175 dissertations as result.

Since 2010 he has been HRH Specialist for the Poverty Reduction Special Task-force under the Vice President of  the Republic of Indonesia. He has been a co-investigator for iUKGS (Innovative School Oral Health National Program), since 2008 and is Team Leader for Hospital Manager Competencies Harmonization among AsiaPacific Economic Countries (APEC).

He is a Health Policy specialist on the National TB Expert Committee, and serves as Director for the Global Fund for TB Program at the School of Public Health at the University of Indonesia. He is an expert panel member on the Health Research Committee for Health Lecturers of the Ministry of Health, Public Health Research of the National Institute for Health Research and Development, and the Development of Healthcare service at Remote areas, State Borderlines and Small Islands. He also advises for the HIV/AIDs control advisory board.  He is a member of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) Oral Health Working Group.

In the past he was HRH Vice Dean for the School of Public Health, Chairman of the Health Policy and Management Department, and Director of the Centre for Health Administration and Policy Studies at the University of Indonesia.
